What an excellent way to combine the Eastern philosophy of yoga with Western medicine. The distinguished speakers, Dr. MD Sunil Thummala, MD, *Neurology, and Dr. Joysree Subramanian, MD, Pain Mgmt, spoke on the September 15th Seminar.

Dr. Joysree explained the pain and how yoga and modern medical interventions can be cost-effective. She cited many studies on yoga therapy and the need for further Randomized control trials in this field.

Dr. Thummala helped us understand the difference between muscular pain and neurological pain. The importance of posture, the anatomy of the spine, and specific back pain conditions were discussed. Yoga can be a long-term healing modality, while modern medicine plays a role in acute pain.

What is pain management?

Chronic Pain is the most common condition people experience. Chronic pain can result from injuries, accidents, chronic stress, arthritis, neurological conditions, cancer, and other health conditions. It can also result from treatments for conditions and diseases. Acute Pain can last a short time but chronic pain is when it last for months or years.

Pain management involves medications, exercises, and therapies such as Physical therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic adjustment, and yoga therapy. One approach or a combination of several approaches can be used to effectively manage pain conditions.

Holistic Pain Management

Yogic Management of Pain conditions is a holistic approach to healing involving yoga practices and understanding yogic concepts. In this workshop, participants will explore yoga practices, such as asana (postures) and pranayama (breathing practices), along with the concept of Ashtanga yoga and the philosophy of yoga. See Principles of Yoga Therapy below for details.

Yes, Yoga Philosophy Heals - Apart from teaching the yoga techniques for back pain you will understand how mental level disturbances and the looped speed of the mind can be the potential cause of psychosomatic and chronic diseases. We focus on Abhyasa (practice) and Vairagya (letting go). The deep-rooted habitual thought patterns require persevering practice (Abhyasa). This workshop attempts to build that perseverance through sustained practice techniques. Attachment to worldly enjoyment and aversion to the inevitable pain and difficulties in life create stress. This workshop attempts to build awareness of the subtle aspects of life that create stress.

Principles of Yoga Therapy

Relax the muscles

  • Stimulate them slightly so that awareness is built.

  • Relaxation through awareness

  • Sankalpa – Wish without expectation

  • Visualization of healing Example: Supine Pelvic Tilt – Back Press

    Flexibility

  • Spinal muscles, hip, and hamstrings Stretch without stress.

  • Yin Yoga Concept: Let gravity do it, let the breath do it, and let it happen.

  • Ex: Straight Leg Raising

    Strength

  • Core, back, and gluteal muscles

  • Examples are Yogic Crunches for the core, Bhujangasana, Shalabhasana for the Back, and Setubandhasana-like stretches for Gluteal muscles
