Yoga Module

Dr. Nidhi Ram says effects of stress hormones may result constriction in Uterine blood vessels, thus interfering with conception. Yoga poses such as Setubandhasana (Bridge Pose), Setubanda Sarvangasana (Supported bridge pose) and Viparita Karani (Legs up to the wall pose) help to gently stimulate downward energy (from navel to the floor of pelvis, as well as increase micro circulation in the reproductive tract.

Fertility Yoga increases relaxation, blood flow to the uterus and reproductive organs (improving egg quality), creates a sense of peace and well-being and teaches the body to become more open and less rigid.

Yoga module incorporates breathing exercises, Suryanamaskara (Sun Salutations), Asanas (poses), Relaxation practices, Pranayamas and Meditation with imagery.

Evidence based approach

Rahul Sachdev, M.D., a specialist in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey says he has no doubt that stress can lead to infertility.
At St. Peter's Medical Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Couples who took part in Stress Reduction practices as Yoga and Meditation had a 50% Fertility rate within a year.
Harvard Medical School researcher Alice Domar, Ph.D., published the results of a study in Fertility and Sterility (Vol. 73, No. 4) that showed women who participated in her program, which included relaxation and yoga, were almost three times more likely to get pregnant than women who didn't.
In Domar's 10-week mind-body workshop, 184 infertile women who had been trying to get pregnant, 55 percent of the women in the group using yoga and other techniques got pregnant within a year

Infertility and Yoga

Many holistic health approaches emphasize the importance of a healthy body, mind and spirit in order to make both sperm and egg as vital as possible. It's very understandable that having difficulty getting pregnant can make people feel sad, angry, guilty, lonely, or anxious-or all of the above! Since high stress is clearly not the most hospitable environment for sperm and egg, stresssurrounding repeated attempts at pregnancy can create a vicious cycle. Some people have broken this cycle by signing up with a Mind/Body fertility program, which helps them relax more and think more positively.

Mechanism

Stress has physiological effects that will alter the balance of hormones in the body. In 2012, SVYASA researcher Nidhi Ram, Ph.D., published the results of a study in Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (Vol. 19, No. 2) that supports the theory that psychological distress can have effects on multiple systems, including inhibition of hypothalamic GnRH, activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. The impact of these perturbations by psychological stress and depression could then in turn adversely affect ovulation, fertilization.

Cyclic Meditation for Sleep 2014

CM SLEEP STUDY

Study Objective: To study the effect of Cyclic meditation (CM) on the quality of sleep for people with anxiety and high work related stress among adults.

Primary Hypothesis: CM may improve the quality of sleep for people with anxiety neurosis and high work related stress.

Secondary hypothesis: Regular practice of CM reduces the risk of hypertension, better control of blood sugar levels in those with diabetics and improves overall medicine and symptom scores for people with minor health conditions.

Subjects: Normal healthy volunteers with a age range 30-65 and patients with anxiety issues, Insomnia, Snoring, Sleep apnea, Hypertension, Diabetes mellitus type II and such other metabolic disorders) would be recruited from the community.

Intervention: A 4-week, daily practice of a given session of recorded CM practice session. Volunteers will undergo training and practice of CM at their respective homes for a period of 4 weeks. They will also attend one yoga class per week conducted by a Yoga Bharati certified yoga teacher.

Outcome measures (pre and post intervention)
• Standard Anthropometric measures including height & weight, BMI will be calculated.
• Clinical vitals viz., - Blood pressure, Pulse rate, , Respiratory Rate, Breath Holding Time and Bhramari time [to measure expiratory volume]
• Performance test viz., Flexibility assessed using Sit and Reach box
• Brief Case History to record the presence of anxiety issues, Insomnia, Snoring, Sleep apnea, Hypertension, Diabetes mellitus type II and such other metabolic disorders)
• State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (State X1)
• Pittsburg Sleep Scale
• Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)

Compulsory Daily Log
• Stanford Sleepiness Scale

Background and rationale:
Yoga has shown to reduce stress levels and improve quality of sleep. Cyclic Meditation [CM] is a technique of 'moving meditation', which combines the practice of yoga postures with guided meditation. This technique is developed Vivekananda Yoga Research Foundation, Bengaluru (VYASA). The technique has its origin in an ancient Indian text, Mandukya Upanishad. All meditations, irrespective of the strategies involved are believed to help reach the state of dhyana – an uninterrupted flow of consciousness without the distraction of the mind. There are several strategies in CM that include breath awareness, awareness of internal sensations that makes it applicable to people with different tendencies such as rajasic (hyperactive mind), tamasic (sluggish mind) or satvic (balanced mind). In CM, the period of practicing yoga postures constitutes the awakening practices, while periods of supine rest comprise calming practices. An essential part of the practice of CM is being aware of sensations arising in the body. This supports the idea that a combination of stimulating and calming techniques practiced with a background of relaxation and awareness (during CM) may reduce psycho physiological arousal more than resting in a supine posture for the same duration.
A detailed study report on different studies of the psycho-physiological effects of CM are found in International Journal of Yoga Therapy [2009 vol2 issue 2]

Timeframe:
Pre-study Assessments: 2-3 days before the intervention
Post study assessments: 2-3 days post intervention.

Date: Sunday June 22, 2014

Venue: Bayland's Park

Sunnyvale, CA

Time: 6.30 a.m to 1 p.m

What is Yogathon ?

Yogathon is combination of Suryathon and Yoga with breath/body synchronization.  Suryathon means Surya Namasakara Yagna (Sun Salutation Marathon).  Yagna means sacrifice. In Indian tradition, there is a sacrificial fire called havan or yagna kunda where the entire community offers their own contribution into the fire. Fire symbolizes sacrifice. Yagna brings the community together for a noble cause and builds confidence in the community in their ability to reach a difficult goal. This can be linked to the tradition of Marathon in the west.

Yogathon is a Marathon where an individual sets a goal and practices Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutations) daily starting with a small number and gradually increases the count per day to reach the goal. The idea is to complete the targeted rounds of Surya Namaskar during the Sevathon event. The duration of the event preparation and execution is 6- 8 weeks.

What is Surya Namaskar ?

Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation is a series of poses in a continuous flow, synchronized with the breath. The most common versions of Surya Namaskar consist of 10, 12, 18 or 21 poses. Perform this series every morning and/or evening, and more if you desire. As always in yoga, practice slowly and consciously. If you practice only a little yoga each day, practice Surya Namaskar. For people with limited time, the Surya Namaskar exercises every muscle and joint while stimulating the body. Surya Namaskar is performed to give reverence to the internal Sun, the creative force that radiates inside the body, and the external Sun, which shines outside the body.

What is Significance of Sun ?

Most of the ancient cultures worship the Sun. The Greeks called the Sun god Helius, the Romans referred to him as Titan and Hyperoin, the Egyptians called him Ra (Ra-Atum-Khepri). In Mexican culture, he is Kikich Ahau. The Germans call the Sun Sol. In Chinese culture, the Sun represents YANG (Pingala) and the Moon represents YIN (Ida),the basis of everything in nature.

What is the target of the Yogathon?

Together as a group, let us try to maximize the Surya Namaskara sequences in the count of 27, 54, and 108. Yes we can do it.

How can one register and practice?

A set of 10, 12 or 18 counts is considered as one Surya Namaskar (depending on which version you are practicing). Please keep count of the number of sets you practice every day.  Discuss the count on a weekly basis to Suryathon co-ordinators.

Pranayama for Children - Invitation 2014

Invitation for Research Participation

(Effect of left and Right Nostril on cognitive functions)

We are excited to do a research study to measure the potential benefits of right and left nostril breathing (chandra and surya anuloma viloma) on cognitive tasks that measure verbal and spatial memory for children. We did a pilot study for the Synopsis Science Fair and we would like to take the study to the next level. For our study, we are asking that your children be test subjects as there are numerous benefits for them which we will cover.

Who can participate in the study?

For our study, we will need healthy and right-handed children from the ages of 7-12. The children will undergo a 10 day training to learn surya and chandra anuloma viloma. Then they will do 4 days of testing with with the tests involving paper pencil and software based questions

What are the benefits for my child?

The children will learn pranayama and be able to do 15 minutes of nostril breathing (chandra and surya anuloma viloma), a great achievement for a child, develop focus and concentration, and may see an increase in cognitive performance and test scores.

What and where is the training?

The children will have to do 10 days of training for 60 minutes of each day in which we will teach them the techniques of right and left nostril breathing. For your convenience, we will have 15 days of training at 3-4 locations each day at different times, but your child will only have to choose any 10 days at one of the below locations or time.

The training session duration: July 28th-Aug 8th, 2014 (Any 10 sessions to be attended by kids)

Tentative Plan

  • South Bay (covering Sunnyvale, Cupertino, W.San Jose, Campbell & Saratoga areas)
  • East Bay (Fremont area)
